Nasty germs in hotel rooms

Sunday, 22 Mar, 2005 0

Your hotel bed may be neatly made with sparkling sheets and your bathroom is sparkling clean, but an Arizona researcher says beware of that dirty TV remote.

University of Arizona microbiology professor Chuck Gerba studied a dozen Tucson hotels.  He concluded:

“One of the dirtiest places in the room people don’t expect is the TV channel changer, believe is or not.”

Virtually all guests use the remote, but no one cleans it.

Mr Gerba says his research found that there was a “statistically significant” relationship between a room’s price and its bacteria levels. So if you pay more for a room, there’s less bacteria.

He had another suggestion for coping with dirty remotes: wash your hands.

“That’s probably one of the best defenses you can use,” Mr Gerba told the Arizona Republic.
