National Airlines gets plane back after paying overdue airport fees

National Airlines has now got its aircraft back after it was impounded in Canada over the weekend for unpaid airport fees.

The carrier settled its outstanding bill for $182,000 on Monday but last Friday’s service to Orlando was cancelled as a result of the legal action.

The airline rebooked or refunded all passengers who were due to take that flight, it said.

The St Johns International Airport Authority in Newfoundland seized the Boeing 757 after a Newfoundland Supreme Court order.

The unpaid fees for twice-weekly direct flights to Orlando, dated back to April, according to lawyer Meghan King.

"St. John’s International Airport Authority exhausted all avenues to collect these payments prior to obtaining this court order," it said Friday.

"The aircraft was scheduled to depart St. John’s International Airport at 5:45pm on Friday, but will not be released for service until outstanding payments are received."
