Netherlands returns to partial lockdown
A partial lockdown in the Netherlands was met by violent protests amid soaring Covid cases in the country. Ahead of the restrictions, protesters in the Hague were hit by water cannon.
It’s the first country in Western Europe to reactivate significant restrictions. It amounts to a partial curfew with bars, restaurants and supermarkets ordered to close at 8pm and people are urged to work from home. Shops selling non-essential items must close at 6pm.
Elsewhere, Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said a lockdown will be imposed for unvaccinated people two regions this week.
