The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) has just made its highly anticipated opening, after five years in development.

The Hong Kong Palace Museum houses over 900 artworks on loan from the Palace Museum in Beijing, the majority of which are on display in Hong Kong for the first time.

Alongside these are over 10 pieces loaned from the Louvre.

Dane Cheng, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Hong Kong Palace Museum to Hong Kong’s artistic and cultural landscape.”

“This world-class museum will generate even more interest for Hong Kong as an arts and cultural destination.”

It will offer educational, cultural, and professional exchange programmes, and help position Hong Kong as a hub for art and cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world.

It occupies 13,000 square metres and has an atrium lined with floor to ceiling windows.

HKPM opens with special exhibitions showcasing contemporary Asian and global art.

It says the seven exhibitions offer entrypoints into understanding Chinese heritage, culture and creativity through architecture, ceramics and royal portraits.

The HKPM joins other landmark attractions on the Victoria Harbour waterfront, such as M+, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture, the Xiqu Centre for Cantonese opera and the recently renovated Hong Kong Museum of Art.
