New bridge to span Pearl River Delta
HONG KONG – In a major boost for Hong Kong, Beijing has agreed to back the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau toll bridge, a huge project connecting Hong Kong and Macau with mainland China’s industrial powerhouses in the Pearl River Delta.
Together, the series of bridges will be among the longest in the world.
Guangdong and the central government, Hong Kong and Macau will each contribute to the project.
Guangdong will manage the bridge as it is within its sea area and, therefore, under its jurisdiction,
The three governments are still to discuss several details, such as tolls, the quota system for traffic flows on the bridge and legal issues.
The Hong Kong government hopes the bridge will be completed in 2015-16
