New Brooklyn terminal spruces up for a Queen
A ceremonial ribbon-cutting is planned next month for the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, which is expected to have 39 departures this year from Carnival Corporation, Cunard and Princess Cruises.
A $150 million investment in new cruise facilities will be unveiled 15 April when the Queen Mary 2 sails into the New York Harbor and anchors in a slip off Pier 12.
The expansion in Brooklyn included a terminal designed with wider and deeper channels to accommodate the new and larger ships.
The 180,000 square foot terminal is being described as one of the most efficient in the country. The terminal is particularly easy to access from the Kennedy airport.
Brooklyn tourist officials hope some cruisers become visitors, but the area around the terminal has been slow to move from diner-style restaurants and neighborhood bars to renovated lofts and trendier eating places.
