New Charleroi deal for Ryanair?
Ryanair and the Wallonia regional government in Belgium are reportedly ready to submit a deal to the European Commission that would keep the no-frills carrier flying from Charleroi airport. As reported by News From Abroad, the carrier was ordered to repay millions of euros in subsidies after the Commission decided part of the arrangement between the airport and the carrier broke EU law. But The Guardian today reports that a new deal will be put before the EU this week and, in the meantime, the carrier will carry on flying from Charleroi. Wallonia’s economics minister Serge Kubla is quoted as saying that the deal will lower taxes for all carriers using the airport. She reportedly said: “Under this agreement Ryanair will stay in Charleroi provisionally. What we will do is give the Commission the agreement tomorrow or later this week so they can examine the text.” Ryanair will reportedly make an announcement on the deal today or tomorrow.
