New executive director for AITO

Alistair McLean has been named as the new executive director for the Association of Independent Tour Operators.

He takes over from current executive manager Angela Simpson at the association’s agm on April 22 after a two-week hand-over period.

McLean was previously marketing and tourism development manager for the Government of St Helena. He has also worked with the South Australia Tourism Commission.

AITO chairman Derek Moore: “Alistair has run his own specialist tour operating company, has worked as general manager of a specialist tour operator, and understands the workings of the travel industry from a wide range of perspectives, having also been involved with tourist boards.

“He impressed AITO’s recruitment committee with his understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing AITO, and we are delighted to welcome him on board in this newly-upgraded director-level role.”

Moore added: “We owe a great debt of gratitude to Angela Simpson, our outgoing executive manager.

“Over the past six years, she has run a tight ship with the help of her team, and we shall be sorry to see her go. We wish her well in whatever future endeavours she decides to tackle, but, most importantly, we wish her a most enjoyable and relaxing holiday period first of all.  Angela has worked some very long hours at AITO.”

McLean said:  “I relish the challenge that running AITO will bring, and I look forward to meeting many members at the AGM and to working with them to maximise the benefits that they derive from AITO.

“Consumers are now recognising that quality is important where holidays are concerned and are seeking exactly what AITO and its members offer.

“AITO is in the right place at the right time, and we have the perfect opportunity in 2008 and beyond to ensure that AITO members are recognised as the standard bearers for the quality end of the travel industry.”
