New fears in Bangkok shutdown

The political standoff in Bangkok shows no sign of slackening off as security forces warn of new threats.

The Bangkok Post reports that the army has raised the alert over the possibility of more violence at anti-government protests after intelligence found weapons and explosives are being moved into Bangkok.

The warning has raised further concerns over the political conflict, which is turning increasingly violent.

The People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) was targeted on Friday and Sunday with two grenade attacks,

On Friday, one PDRC supporter was killed and 39 others wounded after a grenade was thrown into a throng of protesters while they marched as part of the protest group’s “Bangkok shutdown”.

The army has so far not backed a police call for an emergency government decree.

“The situation has not yet escalated to the point where we must get involved,” Army Gen Prayuth said.

At least 20 Bangkok roads have been closed or partially closed by the demonstrations.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is monitoring the situation and says there is no threat to the safety of tourists.
