New Haven, CT bans city workers from Avelo for business travel

The backlash against Avelo Airlines continues.

The city of New Haven, Connecticut has banned city employees from flying on Avelo Airlines when using public funds.

The Mayor announced the policy due to Avelo’s controversial contract to operate ‘deplorable’ ICE deportation flights for the government.

Tweed New Haven Airport is one of Avelo’s main Northeast airport bases.

In a memo sent to employees, Mayor Justin Elicker said: “Avelo Airlines continued profiteering from the Trump Administration’s inhumane and often illegal immigration policies is antithetical to our values as a city, and not something we will support with city funds or taxpayer dollars.”

“Until it changes it policies and practices, municipal employees are prohibited from using public funds for any travel on Avelo Airlines or using city resources to promote, market or partner with Avelo Airlines.”

“Travel should be about bringing people together, not tearing families apart.”

Avelo recently announced it was exiting the west coast market amid regular anti-deportation flight protests at airports it serves.

The airline responded: “It is unfortunate New Haven has chosen to direct its employees to not fly Avelo for official travel. We hope in the future the City will change its mind.”
