New high-speed catamaran from Miami to Key West
West and Miami, Florida, are considered some of the most popular travel destinations in the United States. However, getting between the two has always been an arduous challenge. Now there is a new comfortable and convenient way to journey to the southern-most point with the new Key West Express ferry service. Departing Thursday – Sunday at 8:30 a.m. from Key Biscayne in Miami, this high-speed jet-propelled catamaran, makes for a smooth trip in just under four hours, docking in the heart of old town.
The service is available as a same-day trip or can be combined with overnights in Key West. The Key West Express departs Key West that evening at 5:30 p.m. which also provides a great opportunity for people visiting Key West or residents of the Keys to travel to Miami.
Rates for a round-trip ticket aboard the ferry are $98 per person for adults, $66 for children 12 and under, and $79 for college students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased online or at the dock, however reservations are highly suggested.
With 7,200 horsepower, the Big Cat Express is one of the fastest, jet-powered ferries operating in Florida – traveling at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. The ship offers the latest in marine technology combined with the passenger comforts of a luxury train including contoured seats with headrests and plush couches with tables. Accommodating up to 370 passengers, the vessel features three passenger decks including an open-air top level for sun enthusiasts, six plasma televisions with satellite reception, full bar and food service
“We’ve been successfully operating our high-speed ferry service from Fort Myers and Marco Island to Key West for the past 12 years and anticipate this Miami to Key West route to be equally successful,” said Joe Miller, manager of the Key West Express.
The Key West Express operates Thursday – Sunday (weather permitting). The ship departs from Key Biscayne in Miami (adjacent to the Miami Seaquarium®) daily at 8:30 a.m. to arrive in Key West at approximately 12:30 p.m., and then departs Key West at 5:30 p.m. to arrive back in Miami at approximately 9:30 p.m. In business for 12 years, the company also operates three other ferries to Key West departing from Fort Myers Beach and Marco Island.
