New IT system for Star Alliance
Star Alliance is building a common IT system for its member airlines in a move that it claims will cut costs and better meet the needs of the public.
Lufthansa and United will be the first carriers to scrap their legacy systems and adopt the new Amadeus-designed system with expansion to other Star members planned.
Star Alliance chief executive Jaan Albrecht said: “The Common IT platform represents the realisation of a long term strategic goal, driven by the effort to better serve the customer, significantly lower IT costs and dramatically increase the speed of delivering new product to market.”
While the carriers’ current IT systems all use different technologies, the new platform is based on a common technical infrastructure and software.
The heart of the system offers enhanced customer service functionalities for sales and airport environments and include such transactions as schedule, availability, inventory, reservations, quotes and ticketing.
Cost savings will come from the automation of business processes and in the speed in which airlines can get new product to market.
“The Common IT platform is a good example of how we envisage the future co-operation within the alliance,” added Albrecht.
Lufthansa chairman of the executive board and chief executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber said: “This common IT platform is an important step forward for passengers, the Star Alliance and Lufthansa. We can now offer our customers an ever better service from reservation to check-in.”
