New museum for Great Yarmouth
Hopes are high in the east coast resort of Great Yarmouth that a new £4.5 million museum will help to regenerate the town as a “centre for cultural tourism”.
The town’s Tower Curing Works building will house the new museum, which will boast a 70-foot sail sculpture – as tall as the resort’s famous roller coaster that dominates the seafront.
According to the Eastern Daily Press, the museum is aimed at tracing the history of Great Yarmouth and will provide a better showcase for the town’s Maritime Collection, which is presently housed in the Maritime Museum, on the seafront.
Paul Wishart, operations manager at the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service, told the newspaper that the designers of the museum were keen for it not to become a “dusty collection”.
He said: “We are not about putting things behind glass, it is about touching and handling and getting really close. We will be able to display just as much – if not more than – was in the Maritime Museum as well as larger items. We will also be able to offer full access for wheelchairs and pushchairs.”
