New online travel insurance covers DVT

Monday, 05 May, 2006 0

Specialist travel insurance provider P J Hayman and Company has launched the first travel insurance policy that covers Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

Called 24/7 Travel Insurance, the online policy has been developed in response to public concern about the condition, which is believed to be linked to air travel.

A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein, usually in the lower leg. In most cases clots are small and do not cause any symptoms as the body is able to gradually break down the clot without any long-term effects.

However, public concern has been heightened due to media coverage of a number of cases where travellers have developed complications from DVT, which can arise hours or days after the clot is formed and, in some instances, can be fatal.

The new 24/7 Travel Insurance provides immediate emergency medical assistance cover for a traveller contracting DVT, but also provides £10,000 in the event that death occurs during the trip or within 72 hours after the policyholder has arrived home.

Managing director Peter Hayman said: “The recent House of Lords ruling against DVT sufferers’ right to sue airlines has again highlighted public concern over this issue. Our new policy responds to this concern by ensuring that families are able to cope financially with the immediate aftermath should the unthinkable happen to a loved one who contracts DVT.”
