New sacred sites in Alice Springs
Alice Springs Aboriginal Culture Tours, operated via Aurora Resorts Alice Springs, has launched a brand new tour focusing on the sacred sites, culture and history of the Arrernte people which dates back over 2,000 years.  The guided, half-day “Caterpillar (Yeperenye) Tour”, which begins in April 2007, takes in the famous Todd dry river bed, the old Afghan cameleers’ campsites, as well as Emily Gap and Jessie Gap where participants visit sacred sites and discover more about traditional food and medicines sourced by central Australian Aboriginals.

A trip to the top of Anzac Hill provides panoramic views across Alice Springs, followed by the opportunity to taste native Australian cuisine at a buffet lunch at the Red Ochre Grill. The cost of A$79 (approx. £31) per person includes a courtesy hotel pick-up and drop-off and an Aboriginal guide. For A$99 (approx. £40) per person, the half-day tour includes a three-course buffet-style lunch with a glass of wine and tea or coffee. http://www.auroraresorts.com.au/

Jack and Jillaroo experience
For visitors wishing to try their hand at working on a cattle ranch, the Territory’s only cattle industry training facility, Charles Darwin University’s Rural Campus Katherine, has launched a five-day Jackaroo Jillaroo Experience.  As with real life apprentice Jackaroos and Jillaroos working on Outback cattle stations, participants learn basic Outback skills such as horse riding, mustering cattle, quad biking, building and repairing fences.

Accommodation is comfortable, single occupancy with shared bathroom facilities and all meals included. There is also the use of a swimming pool at the end of each day, plus a canoeing or cruising excursion in the Katherine Gorge. The course costs A$990 (£414). This does not include use of hat, boots and other gear necessary for a safe horse riding experience. http://www.outbackjj.com.au/

Helicopter tours
East MacDonnell Magic, a new half-day helicopter tour from Alice Springs Helicopters, offers participants unobscured 180-degree views of the East Macdonnell Ranges which stretch for over 100 kms. east from Alice Springs.  The flight takes in Jessie Gap, along the ‘red ranges’ to the sheer quartzite cliffs of Trephina Gorge, then to Ruby Gap, N’Dhala Gorge and Corroboree Rock.

Visitors can visit one of the Territory’s oldest working cattle stations, Ooraminna Homestead, for refreshments on the verandah, whilst overnight deluxe cabin stays can also be arranged. http://www.alicespringshelicopters.com.au/
