New TSA pilot program enables in-airport PreCheck enrolment
A new TSA PreCheck enrolment pilot program at Baltimore Washington International Airport hopes to significantly boost trusted traveler registrations.
The number of enrolments has stalled somewhat and is way down on projected numbers in part due to the hassle of attending an in-person interview.
The new pilot program does away with the visit to an enrolment center and allows travelers to sign up within the airport before boarding.
TSA agents are using special tablet devices which can scan and save fingerprints and verify identification on the spot.
TSA officials will assess the times of day when passengers are more likely to take time to enrol and whether there is a difference in the number of enrolments of travelers flying domestically or to international destinations.
The government has seen the growth of new enrolments slow down and ultimately wants to make the enrolment process more streamlined and convenient for travelers, especially frequent fliers.
The Baltimore pilot program runs through September 30 and if it is deemed successful may be rolled out to other airports nationwide.
