New York battered by more storms

New York and the east coast of America are being battered by gale force winds, slush, snow and rain, forcing airlines to cancel flights

British Airways cancelled five flights from Heathrow to JFK and four flights from JFK to Heathrow yesterday. It said it was planning to operate a normal service today, but is monitoring the situation.

Virgin said its flights were operating as scheduled.

Bloomberg News reported that United and American cancelled most flights in and out of the area yesterday and are cancelling some today.

Nearly 500 flights were cancelled by United at its hub at Newark Liberty airport. American and American Eagle cut about 290 flights.

The news agency says other major airlines are monitoring the situation.

According to airline tracking service FlightStats, a total of 1,700 flights were cancelled yesterday and the number is building up today.

Thousands more residents in New York and New Jersey have been left without power, but damage from the latest storm, named Athena, was less than had been feared.

But the storm is hampering recovery efforts from when Sandy hit last week and reconstruction work was brought to a halt due to high winds.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he was still concerned about security in areas where flood defences have not yet been repaired.
