New York prepares for West Nile Virus outbreak

This year’s weather has created perfect conditions for disease, say experts

Authorities in parts of the United States’ eastern seabord are warning that the region could be hit by an outbreak of West Nile Virus, a deadly disease spread by mosquitoes.

Heavy rain leading to an abundance of standing water have created ideal breeding conditions for “larger, hungrier” mosquitoes, according to a report in The Guardian. Fears that swarms of the insects could soon affect even downtown areas of cities including New York have led to the declaration of a “mosquito awareness week”, while helicopter crews have been dropping insecticide over parts of the city’s Staten Island to contain the threat.

The virus was first detected in New York four years ago and the disease led to 284 deaths across the United States last year.

New York’s assistant commissioner for veterinary and pest control services, James Gibson, told the newspaper: “The weather had got warmer and when there are a lot of breeding sites it is a cause for concern. The virus is still new and extremely unpredictable. Last year there were drought conditions and there was an explosive number of cases.”
