North America ships setting sail for Belfast

Saturday, 10 May, 2006 0

The California-based Princess Cruise Lines and other North American ship operators are increasingly finding their way to a European destination that would have little appeal only a few years ago  —  Belfast.

Princes, Crystal Cruises and Celebrity Cruises are among more than 23 cruise ships that will be stopping in Belfast over the next four months. The ships will be carrying more than 30,000 passengers and crew to Northern Ireland’s capital, which during the not-so-long ago “troubles” would not even be considered as a tourist stop.

Until recently there was no cruise program. As recently as 2005, there were only 16 ships, both North American and others.

“It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come,” said Lisa McMurray of the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau.
