Northern Italy hit by earthquake
A strong earthquake is reported to have hit northern Italy last night, causing damage in many parts of the region.
According to the BBC, the quake, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, hit just before midnight, with its epicentre near Lake Garda.
While there are no reports of any injuries, damage has been reported – especially in Milan and in villages surrounding the lake.
During and after the quake, which lasted around 10 seconds, many buildings were damaged with cracks appearing in walls and lumps of masonry falling off.
The BBC reports that several hospitals in the region were evacuated, while authorities are warning that there could be aftershocks.
