Northwest goes on diet
Northwest Airlines became one of the last carriers to eliminate free meals on all its domestic flights for coach passengers.
The Minneapolis-based carrier is now offering $3 snack boxes or $5 sandwiches.
Northwest says the move will save it up to $30 million a year.
The cost-saving move will be phased in starting 1 March, company officials say.
Meals for business and first-class passengers will not be affected. European and Asian passengers will also not be impacted by the move, according to Northwest.
“It’s one more initiative in our ongoing efforts to reduce overall non-labor costs,” said Hector Adler, Northwest vp of in-flight services.
New snack boxes will include potato chips, cookies, crackers, cheese spread and raisins.
