Norwegian Air Shuttle to hire US pilots

Norwegian Air Shuttle says it finally plans to start hiring US pilots.

Initial hiring will be for its Fort Lauderdale base as it looks to add more routes in the US next year.

Norwegian said it may take on up to 100 US based pilots ‘just to start.’

"Hiring American pilots for our long-haul operation has been one of Norwegian’s goals since launching our trans-Atlantic service three years ago, and we are thrilled that we are finally able to do so," said COO Asgeir Nyseth in a statement.

"With the delivery of 31 additional Boeing Dreamliners over the next few years, Norwegian is excited to be adding American pilots to our ever-growing workforce."

It will be the only European airline to take on American pilots, it said.

Norwegian Air is still awaiting permission from the department of transportation to operate trans-Atlantic US flights via an Irish-based subsidiary.

The carrier has been accused of flouting Scandinavian labor laws by arrempting to hire sub-contracted pilots on lower salaries for its Irish unit.

Norwegian began hiring US flight attendants in 2013 based in Fort Lauderdale and New York’s JFK, and expects that to grow to 500 by the end of 2016.

In a shift in its long-haul, low-cost strategy, CEO Bjorn Kjos said establishing a hub in Buenos Aires, Argentina is a possibility as it looks to tap the South American market.

Subject to approvals, it may offer flights from European hubs such as Oslo, London, Paris, Madrid or Barcelona.
