Irate guests who endured a sailing on a ‘floating construction site’ will get a free cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line.
The line has apologized to guests who were on the one way sailing through the Panama Canal on Norwegian Sun.
The ship was due to go straight into dry dock after the cruise but work began during the voyage with cruisers complaining of ‘hellish’ conditions with dust, fumes and incessant noise.
Some guests set up a Facebook page to voice their anger and now the cruise line has listened.
"While we do our utmost to minimize any impact to our guests when these enhancements are being implemented, we do recognize that during a recent sailing, we did not meet the expectations of our guests, nor our own standards, for which we truly apologize," the line said in a statement.
"We realize that this gesture cannot replace their recent experience but do hope to have the opportunity to welcome them on board again soon."
Norwegian had initially offered a 25% credit for a future cruise which was deemed as ‘totally unacceptable’ by the Facebook group which consisted of hundreds of the affected cruisers.
Guests were only told of a ‘revitalisation program’ taking place during the voyage after they embarked, according to passenger Annie Barber.
The Norwegian Sun is receiving upgrades as part of the $400 million Norwegian Edge program.
