NTA: best year since 9-11
The National Tour Association’s (NTA) survey found business on a huge upward spiral, and reported that New York/New York City and Alaska lead the list of NTA tour operators’ top selling summer destinations in North America.
According to NTA’s latest member survey, the top two are followed by a three-way tie with California, Niagara Falls, and Washington, D.C., rounding out the list of five. “Pent-up demand is bringing international and domestic travelers back to these beautiful North American destinations,” said NTA Chairman Mitch Sussman. He added:
“Many travelers were previously fearful to fly far distances or to visit the bigger cities; however, we are now seeing that fear rapidly fading.”
Mr Sussman said that travelers are beginning to see cities such as New York and Washington, D.C., as safe destinations for the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks. He suggests Alaska is a top seller this year because it is a great intermodal destination with beautiful sightseeing and opportunities for adventure and experiential travel.
California, as always, remains popular because of its diverse opportunities, and Niagara Falls is regaining popularity as consumers are setting aside fears of SARS and far-distance travel, he said.
At the same time, NTA said its research continues to show a positive outlook, with
50 percent of NTA tour operators in a web based survey reporting higher numbers of passengers served.
In addition, another 58 percent reported greater overall sales volume during the first quarter of 2004 compared to 2003. Such numbers are the strongest reported since September 11, according to the NTA.
Sixty percent of NTA’s tour operators also expect greater numbers in the second and third quarter 2004.
“NTA members continue to experience increased business”, said NTA president Hank Phillips. “Pent-up demand and growing consumer confidence promises that 2004 will be the best year for travel since pre-9/11.”
