OFT looks to settle dispute
The Office of Fair Trading will hold meetings with Apartments Abroad over its continuing dispute with ABTA.
The operator will raise concerns that Newman Street may have breached competition laws by accusing it of failing to honour bookings.
ABTA claimed Apartments Abroad, together with three other non-ABTA principals, were responsible for bookings taken by collapsed agent Wardle Travel. Apartments Abroad argue that the association was liable under its financial failure procedures as the agent had failed to pass on the money.
ABTA subsequently warned its members that those dealing with the four companies may face increased levels of bonding.
“The OFT has been very obliging and is clearly keen to gain an overall picture of the situation,” said managing director Ian Thirlwall. “This has given us the platform upon which to raise our own concerns regarding the possible implementation of a restrictive practice.”
