On the road, best by car
It’s likely most motorists have never even heard of some of these cities but Forbes.com and MSNBC found a panel of experts who picked the top ten for driving.
The criteria: each town’s proximity to attractions, accessibility to beautiful drives, supply of parking facilities and low potential for traffic congestion, according to the article, "Best American Towns to Visit by Car."
The winners were:
Arcata, Calif.; Athens, Ga.; Chadron, Neb.; Key West, Fla.; Lancaster, Pa.; Leavenworth, Wash.; Portland, Ore.; Provincetown, Mass.; Red Lodge, Mont. and Vail, Colo.
One of the cities that made the top ten, Athens, is only 90 minutes from Atlanta and boasts a “strong bike culture and music scene.”
“The article also notes that vacationers who may have canceled more elaborate vacation plans because of the economy still can take a road trip and enjoy a nice getaway, especially with lower fuel prices,” says the local newspaper.
Another small city, Red Lodge, is known as a premier skiing site in Montana. The site itself warns drivers to be careful here because “lots of residents enjoy bicycling and walking.”
