On with the show: TAT backs travel expo

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will go ahead with Thailand Travel Mart Plus, the country’s largest travel industry business-to-business event, despite the Thai army coup.

The event takes place June 4-6 in Bangkok.

TAT governor Thawatchai Arunyik said that despite the current political situation, TAT has been assured that most buyers and sellers would attend the event.

"This is a major vote of confidence in Thailand, the quality of our tourism products and services, and the determination of the travel trade to go on with business as usual," he said.

TTM+2014 is designed to promote the tourism and service business in Thailand and the Greater Mekong sub region.

Also going ahead next week is the Thailand Tourism Festival 2014, the largest showcase event for domestic tourism, which will be held alongside the TTM+ from June 4-8.

The curfew in Thailand has been relaxed to just four hours between midnight and 4am.

Since the army took control of the country last week, locals and visitors to the country have been banned from going outside from 10pm until 5am.

Tourism officials said: “This is positive news and allows tourists greater flexibility in the evenings once again.”
