A woman has died and her two children were injured after falling from a chairlift at a Colorado ski resort.

The accident happened at Ski Granby Ranch and the state has sent inspectors to investigate.

Police spokeswoman Schelly Olson said they fell about 20 feet onto snow after falling from the chairlift.

The mother and her two daughters were out of state visitors thought to be from Texas

Police say one child is in hospital in a stable condition while the other was airlifted to Denver Children’s Hospital, situated about 90 miles away.

Ski Granby Ranch is a small ski resort, marketing itself as family-friendly.

Rod Kessler, the resort’s operations director said the family ‘came out of their chair’ on the Quickdraw Quad lift.

The cause of the fall is still not clear and deaths from chairlifts at US ski areas are rare.

According to the National Ski Areas Association there have been three deaths from falls since 2004 and the most recent death blamed on a faulty chairlift was in 1993.
