ONE Travel Conference award goes to promoter of Chisholm Trail
Bob Klemme of Enid, Oklahoma, has been named the Cultural Traveler Trailblazer of the Year by the U.S. Cultural & Heritage Tourism Marketing Council for his work promoting the famous western Chisholm Trail.
The award will be presented to Klemme at the SASI-ONE Awards Breakfast on January 17, during the ONE Travel Conference at the Orlando Bonnet Creek Hotel in Orlando, Florida.
The Cultural Traveler Trailblazer Award is presented by the U.S. Cultural & Heritage Tourism Marketing Council to recognize and thank an individual who has demonstrated the passion and commitment to preserving our country's culture and heritage richness for future generations of travelers to experience and appreciate.
"What began as a hobby became a passion for him–a passion that resulted in his single handedly identifying and marking the Chisholm Trail throughout Oklahoma. He has dedicated his life to preserving the heritage of the region," said Sheila Armstrong, executive director of the U.S. Cultural & Heritage Tourism Marketing Association.
Klemme was nominated to receive the award by Berkeley Young, President of Young Strategies Inc.
In nominating him, Young said:
"His boyhood fascination with the historic Chisholm Trail led him to personally mark the exact path the trail took across Oklahoma. He spent countless hours constructing and setting over 400 concrete markers that weighed approximately 200 pounds each, with his goal being to create interest in the Chisholm Trail. His hope is that some day it will become a National Historic Trail."
ONE Travel Conference for Shopping, Dining and Cultural & Heritage Tourism is produced annually by Shop America Alliance and the U.S. Cultural & Heritage Tourism Marketing Council. The Conference brings together leaders in the travel industry to focus on “The Power of Partnership, speaking with ONE Voice.”
