Opinion piece: US Government access to passenger data

Friday, 29 Aug, 2003 0

Toby Joseph, chief operating officer EMEA-APAC, TQ3 Travel Solutions gives his thoughts on the entry requirements that have been introduced by the US government following the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.

Mr Joseph says airlines and travel management companies are objecting to the new requirements on a number of practical issues. Firstly, there are concerns that increased passenger screening could cause delays at US airports, and secondly that the measures could lead to additional costs for travel management companies. Finally, Mr Joseph says airlines are concerned that increased access to Passenger Name Records could breach EU data privacy laws.

According to Mr Joseph, TQ3 Travel Solutions’ take on the developments in the US is that airlines must find an efficient solution for dealing with the extra work. He says: “TQ3 also believes this issue is a clarion call for the travel management industry to take action on a long-standing process inefficiency that does no one any favours: inconsistent PNRs.”
