Orkney mulls cruise ship fee
Orkney Islands Council officials have backed a cruise ship tax proposal.
Councillors says it could raise over £1 million each year.
It comes in response to Scottish Government consultation which could give local authorities the freedom to impose fees for cruise ship arrivals.
Councillors were told that it could generate £1,068,925 based on a £5 per person levy.
Cruise ship visits account for nearly half of tourism to Orkney.
Cruise ship traffic to Orkney has grown more than 200% in the past decade.
The council says the revenue would allow it to meet the ‘growing challenges’ of cruise tourism.
It would help improve infrastructure.
During a meeting raising issues with charging a cruise ship tax, it was revealed the fee would be one-time, even if visiting more than one destination in the Orkneys.
