Ottawa gun attack
Several public buildings in the centre of Ottawa in Canada went into lockdown yesterday after a gunman ran amok in the city.
Residents and visitors in the city centre were told to stay inside and keep away from windows.
The saga began yesterday morning when a soldier guarding the city’s war memorial was shot dead. The gunman then ran into the parliament building and fired more shots before he was shot dead by a security officer.
At the time, police feared the gunman might have armed accomplices who were still lose on the streets of Ottawa.
"The indications are there is more than one gunman. There may be several," Canadian MP Marc Garneau told the BBC. He and fellow politicians were evacuated from the area.
Police in the city are still investigating the possibility the gunman was not working alone.
The incident came hours after Canada raised its terror threat level following a fatal hit-and-run attack on two soldiers in Quebec on Monday. One of the soldiers died, the other was inured and a Muslim convert was killed by Quebec police.
Earlier this month, Canada announced plans to join the US-led campaign of air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq.
