Outrigger and Sheraton do their bit for marine conservation
Outrigger Hotels & Resorts and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration (NOAA) National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP), recently announced an exclusive partnership to educate guests about ocean conservation.
With efforts to increase public awareness about Hawaii’s marine environment, the new agreement is expected to greatly expand the number of educational programs in the coming months.
Among the first enrichment programs being offered complimentary to guests under this agreement are NOAA videos about such subjects as whales, marine sanctuaries and coral reefs, shown daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lobby of the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort on Hawaii’s Big Island.
Visitors will also find a newly installed Humpback Whale Information Kiosk, a whale-tail shaped touch-screen computer system. In the coming months, additional joint programs are being planned for the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach and Outrigger Reef on the Beach, both on the island of O‘ahu. Of a total population of approximately 1,300 endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals spread among the entire Hawaiian archipelago, about 25 of these animals claim the waters and beaches of Kauai as home. Located on Poipu Beach on the southern coast of Kauai, Sheraton Kauai Resort and its surrounding areas are known for beautiful beaches as well as its Hawaiian Monk Seal appearances.
Over the past two years, two Hawaiian Monk Seals births have occurred near the property. Last year, the Sheraton Kauai Resort incorporated a weekly educational program on the Hawaiian Monk Seal for its guests. Partnered with Tim Robinson of the Kauai Monk Seal Watch Program (KMSWP), the 45-minute educational presentation is given by volunteers every Wednesday at 6 p.m., educating guests to safely appreciate this creature endemic to Hawaii.
