Paris luggage handlers arrested
France: Police swoop on 27 workers after year-long operation
Some 27 baggage handlers at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport have been arrested on suspicion of stealing passengers’ luggage.
According to the BBC News website, the arrests, which were carried out in dawn raids at the airport, come after a year-long investigation into “organised thefts”. Police say property including perfume, laptop computers, jewellery, watches, cameras and cash has been recovered, but that the haul has not yet been valued. All those arrested are believed to work for a baggage handling company based at the airport.
The head of the investigation, Captain Frederique Nourdin, told the BBC: “We have been working on this group of people for more than a year. We set up an undercover operation at the terminal and for more than a year we collected enough evidence to prove who was involved in certain thefts.”
The website reports that the operation was launched after large numbers of broken security locks were found near luggage conveyor belts at the airport.
