Passenger load played part in fatal tour boat
Federal officials say the weight and distribution of the 47 passengers aboard the Ethan Allen probably contributed to the accident on Lake George in New York that killed 20 elderly tourists.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) used a boat nearly identical to the Ethan Allen to determine the boat was overloaded. Mark Rosenkur, acting chairman of NTSB, said he did not know how many passengers the boat could have safely held.
New York Governor George Pataki promised to propose legislation to make the state’s boating-safety standards catch up with federal regulations.
The 20 drowning victims were all senior citizens from Michigan and Ohio. They had come to see the fall foliage.
