Passengers fed up with flying are staying on the ground

Air travel-weary passengers are finally getting fed up: a Consumer Travel Alliance poll found that flying as a transportation mode is declining, while more travelers are going by car.

A majority of flyers said they still planned to fly about the same in 2011. More than one-third said, however, they would fly less. Only 17 percent said “more.”

That gave air travel the “most negative numbers of any mode of transport,” said the Alliance.

“Driving, on the other hand, had the highest positive ratings of any mode of transport. Nearly 40 percent of respondents said they planned to travel more by car next year,” according to the Alliance.

Cruising may have a choppy year, too, if these numbers are any indication, according to the survey.

While about 60 percent of the respondents are staying on course, 27 percent say they plan to cruise less in 2011.

Traveler’s flyer problems rest mostly with the Transportation Security Administration’s new screening techniques, the survey found.

“The new TSA scope-n-grope has finally pushed me too far,” said Katharine Chestnut, a frequent flier based in Atlanta. “I will limit, as much as possible, all travel by plane.”
