Passengers on the run after sliding down emergency exits
Three Algerians are on the run in Italy after sliding down the emergency exits of an Alitalia plane while it was preparing for take-off.
The three men forced open the emergency exit of the plane at Rome’s main Fiumicino airport on Wednesday night.
An Alitalia spokesman said that the plane was taxi-ing towards the runway when three passengers activated the emergency slide by opening the door before sliding down and running away.
He added: "Therefore, the Captain was forced to go back to the parking lot. The event happened in a very short time and without consequences for other passengers, except for the inconvenience to move to another aircraft for flying to Istanbul."
The men, who are all still missing, had departed from Algiers with one-way tickets to Istanbul after a layover in Rome, which is a well-known issue, the airline said.
The airline said it had informed the airport and security authorities and called for stricter controls in Algerian airports.
It added that it was confident that solutions will be implemented in order to not allow the recurrence of such incidents anymore.
The flight was immediately grounded and police were called to the scene.
Fiumicino airport is still suffering cancellations following a huge fire which partially destroyed a terminal.
Today, 5% of flights in and out of the airport are still cancelled and other delayed, including services to Heathrow and Gatwick, according to flight tracking website, Flight Aware.
