Pattaya killings: Man arrested
PATTAYA: Police in Thailand have arrested a man in connection with the murder of two Russian women in Pattaya.
The two women were sitting in deckchairs on the beach drinking Thai whisky in the early hours of the morning when they were shot.
An unemployed Thai out on bail awaiting trial for robbery has been arrested for the murders. Police said his motive was robbery, although the official view has been questioned because the accused did not take the women’s mobile phones or their wallets.
It is being speculated that they were victims of a contract killing.
“He is a crook with a multiple criminal record,” provincial police chief Major General Anan Charoenchasri told local reporters..
Police believe they have recovered the murder weapon from a friend of the accused.
Reuters said there has been no official word on why a gunman would be hired to kill the two women, but there has been considerable speculation about inter-gang rivalry in Pattaya, where prostitutes from former Soviet states are common
