Peter Long welcomes new ATOL certificate
TUI Travel has welcomed the Civil Aviation Authority’s announcement that it plans to begin discussions on the introduction of a new ATOL certificate to be issued to holidaymakers booking ATOL-protected travel.
The CAA is seeking industry feedback to the new certificate at the ABTA Travel Convention this week before putting a framework in place for its introduction.
Chief executive Peter Long said that if the new certificate meant that customers realised the value of protection at the point of booking it would be a valuable step forward.
"Today’s announcement by the CAA and (aviation minister) Theresa Villiers are positive for the industry," he said. "Having something that clearly sets out what is protected at the time of making an ATOL booking will lead to less confusion for our customers."
Long said wider reforms of the ATOL system were also necessary and he said it was ‘heartening’ this had been acknowledged by the coalition Government. "We will actively engage with both the CAA and the government to help ensure that the reforms accurately reflect the market place we operate in and protect our customers," he added.
