Philippines anxiously awaits arrival of Super Typhoon Haima

Monday, 19 Oct, 2016 0
The Philippines is bracing for another onslaught as Super Typhoon Haima heads toward the northern province of Luzon.

It will bring winds of up to 180 mph with storm surge and flooding likely.

Forecasters say landslides are a real possibility in some mountainous areas of northern Luzon.

Both Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines Express grounded their scheduled flights from Manila to Tuguegarao.

Sea travel has also been banned in some areas off the eastern coastline.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) director Alex Uy said the popular Mount Pulag Park in Kabaya has already been closed to trekkers after tourists became stranded on a mountain during Typhoon Karen just days ago.

Capital Manila is about 400 km south of where the storm will likely hit, and is not considered an area under threat, but will likely receive heavy rains.

Super Typhoon Haima is slated to make landfall at around 11.00pm local time Wednesday Super with winds almost as powerful as 2013’s Typhoon Haiyan which killed thousands.

"It’s not just heavy rain and strong winds that we are expecting. It’s also floods, landslides and storm surges in coastal areas. Those in these areas, you are in danger. Find safer ground," Allan Tabel, chief of the interior ministry’s disaster and information centre, told reporters.
According to weather.com up to 2.7 million people could be impacted in Northern Philippines before it moves toward Hong Kong and mainland China.

It comes hot on the heels of Typhoon Karen which killed three people and left more than 200,000 without power at the weekend.

More than two dozen homes were destroyed.
