Philippines typhoon forces cancellation of flights, ferries

The Philippines has been hit by a powerful typhoon leading to flights and ferries in the north being cancelled.

Typhoon Koppu hit the country near the town of Casiguran on the island of Luzon on Sunday morning.

Several people are missing, one has died and thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes.

A number of flights, mainly domestic, were grounded at Manila airport.

Head of the government’s main disaster agency, Alexander Pama, told AFP: "I must emphasise that this is just the start. People must remain alert while we try to pick up the pieces in areas already hit."
