Phuket calls tourism crisis summit
Top police, provincial government leaders and tourism industry heads will meet in a high-level summit in Phuket this week to address the island’s safety and security crisis.
This follows the murder last week of Australian travel agent Michelle Smith and the drowning of six tourists on Phuket beaches in five weeks.
The summit will address ways in which Phuket’s hotels and resorts can improve security camera coverage and restore confidence in the island’s ability to ensure the safety of tourists.
In a sign that Thailand is seriously concerned about the Phuket deaths and its impact on international tourism, the Phuket governor has been summoned to appear this week before Thailand’s powerful Senate Committee on Tourism in Bangkok to explain the murder of Mrs Smith and the recent spate of drownings.
