Phuket eyes crackdown on illegal accommodation
A senior Phuket official is calling for a crackdown on illegal hotels and guesthouses and the time-share companies that, he says, are damaging the reputation of Phuket – and Patong in particular.
Jatupong Keawsai, a local government official, said it was well known which accommodation was legal and which was illegal, and which time-share companies were legitimate and which were not.
According to the Phuket Gazette, he suggested the council which oversees Patong should set up an Internet site in the English language that lists all legitimate accommodation, and all illegal accommodation.
He said the same could be done with the time-share companies in an effort to bring to an end the street touts who make a nuisance of themselves and are a constant source of annoyance to visitors to Phuket.
Figures for 2010 show there are about 43,000 rooms in registered establishments on Phuket, but officials believe there could be almost as many rooms in unlicensed establishments.
