Pilots hail working hours victory

Monday, 15 Jun, 2004 0

Pilots have welcomed a decision by EU transport ministers not to increase the maximum length of shift in an aircraft’s cockpit from 12 to 14 hours.

As reported by News From Abroad, the proposal had been to increase the length of shift to ensure fair competition between carriers worldwide, with most airlines firmly in favour of the new regulations.

However, The Guardian reports, in the face of protests and threats that such a move could endanger passengers, ministers from the 25 EU member states yesterday voted to keep the status quo.

The airline pilots’ union Balpa had previously referred to a study that showed crews were some six times more likely to crash once they had been on the flight deck for more than 13 hours.

The Guardian quotes the union’s general secretary Jim McAuslan as saying: “The decision not to endorse is widely welcomed but this is not the end of the story. Clearly, the issue is still alive and our energy will now be directed towards a positive and continued campaign to secure harmonisation but at a safe and scientifically proven level.”
