Plane cabin walls split apart after take-off
An American Airlines flight was forced into an emergency landing after the cabin wall panels cracked open mid-flight.
Flight 2293 returned to San Francisco airport an hour into its flight to Dallas because of a possible blown air duct.
The Boeing 757 landed safely and none of the 184 passengers and six crew members was hurt.
The plane was then towed to a maintenance hangar at SFO.
Aviation experts said the wall panels are not part of the aircraft’s structure and the cracks would not have presented any risk.
The plane did not lose cabin pressure during the incident nor were oxygen masks deployed.
Passengers reported the aircraft violently shaking and loud popping noises as it took off, but they said the flight crew kept everyone calm and assured them the panels were only for cosmetic use.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it would work with the airline to determine the plane’s problem and correct it before it flies again.
A replacement aircraft was sent to fly the passengers to Dallas.
