Plans for new cruise ship dock in Cozumel faces backlash
Opposition to a fourth cruise ship dock on the island of Cozumel is growing. The $25 million project will add cruise ship capacity but residents and activists say it will impact a coral reef restoration project in the area.
Environmental group Coral Reef Alliance says another dock will ruin years of work by volunteer divers to replant coral on the ocean floor. A Change.org petition has gained over 40,000 signatures against a fourth dock.
However it faces challenges to get it scrapped as the port expansion has the support of the government and the company behind the development says the location for the new dock was chosen as it won’t the affect coral reefs.
