P&O cruise passengers shot in Barbados

Two cruise passengers are recovering in hospital after being shot by an armed robber during a stop over in Barbados.

Horrified tourists rushed to the couple’s aid after hearing shots and screams during the daytime attack on the outskirts of the island’s capital, Bridgetown.

A woman in her 50s was shot in the right thigh and a man in his 70s was shot in the pelvis area as they made their way back to the P&O Adonia cruise ship. They had travelled on to the island independently, not as part of an organised excursion.

They were both taken to the nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital where they are said to be ‘comfortable’. One passenger has now been released.

Officers from the Royal Barbados Police Force said the attacker stole the woman’s handbag and fled the scene before police arrived.

P&O Cruises confirmed that two passengers had been hospitalised in Bridgetown following an incident on shore.

A spokesman said: "Local authorities are investigating. Our shoreside customer care team and ship’s medical team are providing support as necessary."

Adonia is on an 85 night world cruise which left Southampton on January 8, 2013 and will arrive back in Southampton on April 3, 2013.

Attacks on tourist visiting Barbados are rare, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

But in January this year, leading professor Dr James Bridges, 72, and his wife Olga Bridges, 62, were attacked by a knife wielding intruder just moments after arriving at their holiday villa on the island.
