Police officers attacked in Tunisia, close to museum massacre

Two traffic police officers have been attacked in the Bardo area of the Tunsian capital Tunis, close to where 20 foreign tourists were killed two years ago.

The Foreign Office said a suspect had been arrested by security forces after the two officers were attacked by an individual with a knife.

"If you are in central Tunis, you should be vigilant and follow the advice of the local authorities," it added.

In March 2015, 20 tourists, including 17 cruise passengers, were killed in a terror attack at the Bardo museum in Tunis.

A state of emergency is still in effect in Tunisia, having been imposed after a suicide attack on a police bus on November 24, 2015. It’s been extended a number of times, most recently on October 12 by one month.

The Foreign Office had imposed a travel ban on Tunisia following the massacre of tourists – including 30 Britons – in the beach resort of Sousse in 2015, which was only lifted in July.

Since then, Thomas Cook has announced that it will re-launch flights to Tunisia on February 13 next year.
