Pressure on MAS to renew fleet
Malaysia Airlines is tipped to review its entire fleet requirement, including the interiors for the A380 superjumbo and A330-300 aircraft.
Last week MAS stitched up a deal with rival AirAsia that effectively hands its low-cost operations to AirAsia, leaving MAS to focus on being a full-service premium carrier.
Qantas, who sponsored MAS’s entry into the oneworld alliance, said this week it would look at new opportunities to work with
Malaysia Airlines “particularly given its services to continental Europe, including Istanbul, Rome and Amsterdamâ€.
The two airlines would need to align their products to the satisfaction of passengers. MAS has an aging fleet with an average age range of 11 to 12 years.
Qantas this week announced an order with Airbus for up to 110 new aircraft from the A320 family.
MAS must also ensure that its product is at least the equal if not better than premium airline rivals such as Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines.
