Private vacation rentals makes up quarter of Hawaii lodging industry

Hawaii Tourism Authority said it estimates the Aloha state has over 22,000 vacation rental units listed online.

A report commissioned by HTA estimates 22,238 units are listed by major websites Vacation Rentals by Owner, Clearstay.com, TripAdvisor and AirBnB.

It represents a total of 43,499 bedrooms, which holds capacity for up to 117,607 people, the study said.

Breaking down the numbers, HTA officials said there were 8,840 units in Maui, 4,986 on the Big Island, 4,411 in Oahu, 3,614 in Kauai, 365 in Molokai at 365 and 22 in Lanai.

If all units were available at the same time it would account for 25% of the state’s room inventory.

"As a knowledge-based organization, the HTA initiated this study to help us, the state, the counties and the industry further understand the reach of this specific market segment," said Ronald Williams, HTA interim CEO.

"It will provide the counties with information to help them better understand this segment when making policy decision in the future."

The study was conducted by consultants SMS Research in late 2013 and between August and September 2014.

Latest HTA data recorded a 3% year-over-year increase in visitor arrivals in October 2014 to 659,821.
